Adingra stars as Ivory Coast beat Nigeria in AFCON final

Brighton & Hove Albion winger Simon Adingra set up two goals as host country Ivory Coast beat Nigeria 2-1 to win the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Adingra assisted Franck Kessie to make it 1-1 in the second half before racing to the byline and crossing for Sebastien Haller, the former West Ham United striker who recovered from cancer last year, to score and give Ivory Coast their third AFCON title, and first since 2015.

Twenty-two-year-old Adingra is one of three Premier League players to taste glory with Ivory Coast, alongside Nottingham Forest duo Willy Boly and Ibrahim Sangare.

It is heartbreak, however, for Ola Aina (Forest), Calvin Bassey (Fulham), Frank Onyeka (Brentford) and Alex Iwobi (Fulham), all of whom started the final for Nigeria.

It brings to an end a tournament that featured a total of 30 Premier League players from 12 different countries.

The seven players who reached the final will now return to their clubs, who will determine whether or not they are available for Matchweek 25.
