In a surprising turn of events, the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) executive committee unanimously rejected Samuel Eto'o's resignation on Monday, February 5th.
The legendary footballer, president since December 2021, offered to step down following the national team's disappointing run at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Eto'o's decision came as no surprise, particularly amid ongoing criticism and allegations of mismanagement plaguing FECAFOOT. However, the executive committee, in a statement, expressed “full confidence” in Eto'o's leadership and his “plan for the reconstruction and development of Cameroon football at all levels.”
This decision highlights the complex dynamics within FECAFOOT. While Eto'o, a four-time African Player of the Year, commands respect for his footballing achievements, his tenure has been marred by controversy. Accusations of financial irregularities and match-fixing, though not officially addressed, continue to cast a shadow over his presidency.
Last week, The Athletic published a damning report alleging “match-fixing, abuse of power, physical threats, inciting violence and spreading false information,” with supporting evidence reportedly submitted to FIFA and CAF ethics committees. These accusations, coupled with Eto’o’s ambassadorial role for a sports betting company – a potential violation of FECAFOOT codes – paint a troubling picture.
The future of head coach Rigobert Song remains shrouded in uncertainty after a lackluster Africa Cup campaign. Cameroon, the five-time champion, scraped by in the group stage and were ultimately eliminated by Nigeria in the round of 16.
